Overview

This document outlines a comprehensive aviation monitoring station capable of receiving:

ADS-B (1090 MHz): Aircraft positions, altitudes, speeds, and flight data

VHF ACARS: Traditional line-of-sight aircraft data link communications

VDL Mode 2: Digital successor to plain ACARS

Satellite AERO (L-band): Inmarsat-based aircraft communications (~1.5 GHz)

HFDL (Optional): HF Data Link for oceanic/polar communications (2-22 MHz)

The station includes a dual-TV display system for real-time visualization.

Yegar Eposab: Complete Campaign Summary

Yegar Eposab: Complete Campaign Summary

BEGIN MESSAGE

With the on going, and much needed conversation about how not to approach, pursue, or otherwise interact with other people - be it for a hopeful romantic relationship or not - Katelyn and I decided to share our story again, but this time from my perspective.

I don’t explicitly recall when I first saw her but I’d wager it was a Follow Friday thread. After a short time of seeing Katelyn pop up either from her own posts or linked in others I became interested in knowing more about the BADASS org and their mission. So here’s tip number one for the guys out there. And yes, I’m singling out the cis-males because it’s what I am and the only category I feel comfortable commenting on. Guys, it’s OK to see someone, find them attractive, and DO NOTHING about it.

Random Thoughts: What It Means to Be...

What it means to be…

We hear this often, “You’re not a hacker because…”, “You’re not a coder because…”, “You’re an idiot because…”

Another phrase many of us are familiar with and maybe use from time to time is, “No plan survives contact with the enemy.”

Follow me for a minute down this rabbit hole of labels and plans.

Plans are good, they provide and ordered prediction of actions required to avoid chaos and achieve a goal. While the statement regarding contact with the enemy is not incorrect, I do not believe it to be wide enough in scope. I suggest that a plan, no matter how well constructed, rarely survives contact with reality. I recently found myself in just such a position. I’m a type of person who needs a plan, but also allows for and is not put off by variations or deviations. Variables injected into the equation built to guide even the simplest of activities can come from any number of unpredictable sources. People of the diverse personality types will react to these upsets or reroutes in ways that might be as unpredictable as the interrupting event itself.

Lost and Found

March 22, 2006

I had just started a 101 level college course on the Linux operating system. In the first week we were directed to download the current Ubuntu .iso and create a live CD to use for the course’s assignments. The recommendation of the instructor was to use the live function of the CD instead of installing the OS to keep things simple. But, seeing as how I have issues keeping things simple, decided to dual-boot the family laptop. Now, in those days the process to dual-boot a computer while maintaining the existing OS was fraught with peril. Resizing the existing partition was tricky, especially when that partition was a year or so old and covered in fragmented records. Knowing this, I did what we all tell others to do but rarely accomplish for ourselves: I made backups.
